XRP Rally Faces Critical Test: Analyst Warns of Potential 'Bear Trap' as Technical Resistance Looms

CryptoPomp Industry

The recent XRP surge, which lifted prices above $1.10 after weeks of sideways consolidation, is drawing increasing scrutiny from technical analysts who see the move as a possible trap rather than a genuine reversal. With the token now testing the 20-week exponential moving average (EMA) near $1.29, the next few weeks could determine whether the rally has legs or whether it sets the stage for a deeper correction toward $1.00.

For context, XRP has been in a downtrend since its peak above $1.90 in early 2024. The recent bounce from the $0.90–$0.95 support zone, combined with a narrowing wedge pattern on the weekly chart, has fueled speculation of a trend change. However, one key technical signal is flashing red: the 20-week EMA just crossed below the 50-week EMA, forming a 'death cross' that historically precedes prolonged bearish momentum. Despite the price recovery, this crossover remains intact, and the wedge formation suggests the market is coiling for a decisive move.

"The rally is running out of momentum at a critical resistance level," said Alexander Lopez, a core protocol developer and forensic analyst who has tracked XRP's price structure for years. "The 20-week EMA has acted as a hard ceiling since March. Every attempt to break above it failed with a sharp reversal. If we see rejection here again, the 'death cross' will pull the price back down, potentially to sub-$1.00 levels. The recent volume profile does not confirm the breakout."

Lopez’s analysis focuses on the wedge pattern, which has been forming since the $0.90 low. A wedge typically resolves in a breakout, but the direction depends on volume and follow-through. In XRP’s case, the bounce from $0.90 came on declining volume, while the subsequent push to $1.20 saw only modest participation. "Low-volume rallies are suspect," he said. "They often trap late buyers who FOMO in, only to get caught when the trend resumes. The data suggests we are seeing a bear trap, not a bull breakout. Trust is a variable, not a constant."

The contrarian angle here is that a genuine reversal would require a clean break above $1.29 with high volume and a weekly close above that level. If that happens, the wedge would be invalidated, and XRP could target $1.60—the next resistance from the 200-week EMA. But the historical precedence is not encouraging. Since the SEC lawsuit against Ripple in late 2020, XRP has consistently struggled to hold gains above moving averages during downtrends. Each bounce was sold into, and each death cross led to new lows.

"The bug is always in the assumption that this time is different," Lopez added. "We saw the same pattern in 2021 when XRP dropped from $1.80 to $0.70 after a death cross. Investors assume the wedge means an upside breakout, but wedge patterns can also be continuation patterns. The market is not obligated to reward hope."

Beyond technicals, the lurking uncertainty remains the SEC vs. Ripple litigation. Any adverse ruling—such as an appeal ruling that classifies XRP as a security—could trigger a catastrophic sell-off, bypassing all technical supports. This is the hidden variable that undermines any bullish thesis. Precision is the only kindness in code, and in markets, ignoring black swans is a form of coding errors.

So what should traders watch? The key signals are clear:

  • Price action at $1.29: A weekly close above this level with volume would signal strength. A rejection and reversal below $1.10 would confirm the bear trap.
  • Volume confirmation: Any move must be accompanied by expanding volume. If XRP pushes higher on shrinking volume, the rally is a liquidity grab.
  • $1.00 support: If the price breaks below $1.00 on high volume, the next support is $0.90–$0.95. A failure there would open the door to $0.70.
  • SEC developments: Any court filing or settlement news trumps all technical analysis. This is the map's hidden anchor.

Opportunities exist on both sides. If the bear trap plays out, a retest of $0.95 could offer a high-risk entry with a stop at $0.88, targeting a rebound back to $1.30. If the breakout is real, buying on a pullback to $1.20 with a stop at $1.10 could capture a move to $1.60. But in both cases, position sizing must account for the high probability of a head-fake.

In the end, XRP’s next move is not just about charts—it’s about the market’s willingness to ignore structural warnings. The rally may continue for a few more days, driven by FOMO and algorithm-driven liquidations, but the structural foundation is weak. As Lopez put it: "Zero knowledge is a liability. The market is offering a narrative of certainty, but the code—the actual price data—tells a different story. Do not confuse a bounce for a trend."

For now, the prudent stance is to wait for confirmation. The wedge will break—the only question is which direction. And given the gravity of the death cross and the SEC specter, the path of least resistance remains downward until proven otherwise.
