Perpetual Futures Are Not 0DTE Options: A Battle Trader's Take on Cboe's Regulatory Distinction

It argued that perpetual futures and zero-days-to-expiration (0DTE) options are not the same financial instrument. The market yawned. I didn't. Core: The Data-Driven Breakdown

I don't trust assertions I can't verify on-chain. So I checked. The on-chain data for perpetual protocols shows that funding rate spikes are a reliable indicator of impending liquidation cascades. The on-chain data for options protocols shows that implied volatility skew is a better predictor of risk. The two cannot be modeled with the same equations.

Takeaway: The Only Path Forward

Cboe's statement is not a market-moving event. It's a signal. The signal is that the regulatory conversation is shifting from "what is this thing?" to "how should we treat it?" That's progress. But progress is slow, and in the meantime, we trade.

I've already adjusted my portfolio. I reduced my exposure to perpetual protocols that rely on centralized oracles. I moved a portion of my spot BTC to a Ledger Nano X—self-custody is the only hedge against regime change. I've set up alerts for CFTC and SEC filings. The chart is a map, not the territory. The map is being redrawn.

If the regulators get this wrong, they will kill innovation in crypto derivatives. If they get it right, we get a path to institutional adoption that doesn't sacrifice the unique properties of perpetuals. The debate is happening now. Most traders are watching the price. I'm watching the dockets.
