When The Economist puts a number on the hidden friction embedded in our favorite trading instrument, we should stop treating it as another bearish headline and start reading it as what it is: a product-level warning about the mathematics of leverage.

Perpetual futures are the undisputed heavyweight of crypto derivatives, representing somewhere between 80% and 90% of total derivatives volume. BitMEX pioneered the design in 2016, and every major platform since—Binance, OKX, Bybit, dYdX, GMX, Hyperliquid—has built on the same fundamental mechanism. The brilliance of the perpetual is its simplicity: no expiry date, no delivery obligation, just a funding rate that anchors the contract price to spot. Every eight hours (or every hour on some venues), longs pay shorts or shorts pay longs, depending on which side is crowded.

The anchor rate is the ingredient most traders ignore. That small baseline component—commonly set at 0.01% per eight-hour period—compounds into a stark reality. Multiply 0.01% by three funding intervals per day, by 365 days, and you arrive at approximately 10.95% annually. This is the "quiet drain" The Economist quantified. But here's what their article glosses over: the anchor rate is merely the floor. When funding skews positive in a bull market—which it often does when leverage buyers pile in—the actual rate can climb well beyond that baseline. The 10% figure is a conservative lower bound, not an upper limit.

Based on my own audit experience of derivatives positions across multiple cycles, I can confirm that the real cost of holding a perpetual long position far exceeds what the funding rate alone suggests. The full cost stack includes trading fees at roughly 0.02% to 0.06% per round trip, slippage that can reach 1% for larger orders in thin order books, and the ever-present threat of forced liquidation that typically adds another 5% to 20% per event depending on leverage. Put it all together, and a patient long position holder is looking at an annual drag of 15% to 50% or more in normal conditions. The Economist's 10% is the best-case scenario.

What makes this fundamentally different from traditional futures is the absence of an institutional backstop. In regulated futures markets, central clearinghouses allocate risk transparently, and the cost structure is visible to all parties. In crypto perpetuals, the ledger remembers what the market forgets—every funding payment, every liquidation cascade, every micro-transfer from leveraged longs to passive shorts is committed to chain, but the aggregate picture rarely enters the trader's mental model. The design is elegant, but it creates a structural negative carry position. The only revenue source for a perpetual long is directional price appreciation. The cost side is guaranteed, continuous, and compounding.

For retail traders—who account for over 70% of crypto derivatives volume according to BIS research—this is a brutal math problem. Consider a trader deploying 10x leverage on a perpetual long. The 10% annual funding drag is applied to the notional position, not the margin. In effect, leverage multiplies the friction. A 10% notional cost on a position with 10x leverage represents 100% of the trader's collateral annually before any price movement. This is why so many leveraged longs evaporate precisely when the market does nothing—volatility is not risk; impermanence is. The market doesn't have to move against you. It just has to stay still.

The mechanism is not a bug. It's a feature, carefully designed to keep the perpetual anchored to spot. The deeper problem is the governance asymmetry: exchanges optimize for trading volume, not user economics, and funding rate parameters are set with little input from the long-side retail participants who bear the cost. I've watched this dynamic play out across every cycle since 2017, when my own student savings were devoured by precisely this kind of friction I didn't yet understand.

Contrarian

The standard industry defense of perpetuals is that funding rates are a fair, two-way market mechanism—shorts pay longs when sentiment flips. This is true in theory, but structurally misleading in practice. The funding rate is symmetric in formula yet profoundly asymmetric in outcome. Bull markets run longer than bear markets on a duration basis, and they attract far more retail leverage. The result is that long-duration positive funding is the default state in crypto's trending regime, and the cost of being persistently long in the direction of the trend is systematically underestimated.

An even more counter-intuitive implication emerges: The Economist's warning may actually be a relative tailwind for compliant futures products and spot exposure. If retail participants internalize the 10% drag, capital should rotate toward CME Bitcoin futures, ETF products, or simply spot accumulation—instruments where carry is not an issue. The article doesn't argue this, but the market will likely vote with its money. And as retail exits perpetuals, the remaining liquidity becomes increasingly institutional and professional, shifting the market closer to the mature derivatives structures the traditional world is familiar with. The concern isn't that the product dies; it's that the funding-rate arbitrage industrial complex loses its retail counterparty.
